Cardinal Newman High School
Cardinal Newman High School is a private, coeducational Roman Catholic college preparatory school located in West Palm Beach, Florida. Founded in the early 1960s, the institution has served the Palm Beach County community for more than six decades. It educates students in grades 9–12 under the Diocese of Palm Beach. The school sits in central West Palm Beach and maintains a strong commitment to academic excellence, spiritual development, and extracurricular activities. It's accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and holds membership in the Florida Catholic Educational Association. The curriculum emphasizes college preparatory coursework, advanced placement opportunities, and a values-based educational philosophy rooted in Catholic teachings.
History
Cardinal Newman High School was established in 1962. The timing wasn't coincidental. The Roman Catholic Church was expanding rapidly throughout South Florida at that moment, and the Diocese of Palm Beach wanted to keep pace. The school was named after John Henry Newman, a nineteenth-century English churchman and theologian whose work shaped Catholic education and intellectual thought. Since the Diocese itself had only been formally created in 1957, this new school represented an important step forward for the region's Catholic families.
When it opened, enrollment was tiny. Fewer than one hundred students crowded into temporary facilities before the school relocated to its permanent campus on the west side of West Palm Beach.[1]
The 1970s and 1980s brought dramatic transformation. Multiple buildings rose on campus to handle growing enrollment: a modern science wing, expanded library facilities, and an athletic complex. The academic program expanded too, with advanced placement courses, honors tracks, and specialized offerings in mathematics, sciences, and humanities. By the 1990s, Cardinal Newman had become one of the primary Catholic secondary institutions in western Palm Beach County. Accreditation remained solid, test scores stayed strong, and the school's reputation grew steadily. Into the twenty-first century, modernization continued. Computer laboratories appeared. Smart classrooms replaced traditional ones. Digital learning resources became standard.
Education
The school runs a comprehensive college preparatory curriculum. It's designed to get students ready for higher education and professional careers. English language arts, social studies, mathematics, science, and foreign languages form the core departments. Students must complete core courses in each discipline, though they can also pursue advanced placement examinations in calculus, biology, chemistry, European history, United States history, and English literature. Honors-level courses and specialized electives let students explore particular academic interests and develop deeper expertise.[2]
Catholic values run through everything here. The educational philosophy weaves these teachings into the curriculum and campus culture. Students take religious education courses, attend mandatory mass, and participate in community service. The school maintains a Catholic chaplaincy and counseling program to support spiritual development and personal growth.
College acceptance rates have been consistently high. Most graduating seniors enroll in four-year colleges and universities, and many receive academic scholarships or merit-based financial aid. The guidance and counseling department does the heavy lifting here, offering test preparation support, college fair attendance, and individual academic planning.
